Seminar on World Intellectual Property Day

The seminar on World Intellectual Property Day titled "IP and the SDGs: Building our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity" was held on April 30, 2024, at ICAR - Central Institute of Fisheries Technology. Organized by the Zonal Technology Management – Agribusiness Incubation Centre, ICAR-CIFT, it was attended by 112 researchers, technical staff, and scholars from ICAR-CIFT headquarters and three other research centers.

Dr. C.O. Mohan, Principal Investigator, ZTM-ABI Centre, ICAR-CIFT welcomed the attendees and highlighted the critical role of intellectual property in enhancing agricultural technology. Dr. George Ninan, Director, ICAR-CIFT, gave his remarks on the strategic importance of IP management in ICAR for achieving sustainable development goals through innovation.

Dr. U. Parvathy, CoPI, ABI Centre introduced the key speakers for the seminar. Adv. Rubina Afzal, Associate Partner at Legacy Partners, Kochi, Kerala, delivered a lecture on "IP and the SDGs: Building our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity." She explored various ways intellectual property can propel the achievement of sustainable development goals, using case studies to illustrate the practical application of IP in fostering significant technological and societal advances.

Following her talk, Mr. Rakesh C.R., a Patent Consultant from Thrissur, Kerala, discussed "Intellectual Property Rights and Prosecution." The interactive session focused on the intricacies of securing IP rights and the prosecution process, emphasizing the challenges and strategic considerations in patenting new technologies in a competitive market.

The seminar concluded with Dr. S. Remya expressing gratitude to the speakers and participants for their engagement and contributions to the seminar's success. She emphasized the importance of continuous discussions on the integration of IP with sustainable development to foster innovation.
