The ICAR- CIFT, Kochi celebrated World Fisheries Day today with a special "Students Interaction cum Brainstorming Programme" organized for students from the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS). The event aimed to inspire the next generation of fisheries professionals and foster discussions on sustainable fishing practices.
Smt. Chinnama Joseph, an accomplished fisherwoman and Vice President of the Inland Fishermen Cooperative Society, Vaikom, was the guest of honor. Sharing her remarkable 55-year journey in the fishing industry, which began at the age of 13, she captivated the audience with stories of resilience, and expertise in her field. Her experiences highlighted the significant contributions of women in the fishing sector and served as a source of inspiration for the students. In recognition of her contributions, ICAR-CIFT honoured Smt. Chinnama during the event. Dr. M.P. Ramesan, Head of the Fishing Technology Division at ICAR-CIFT, presided over the function.
Technical sessions were led by Dr. Madhu V.R. and Dr. Muhammed Ashraf P., Principal Scientists at ICAR-CIFT, who provided valuable insights into innovative fishing technologies and sustainable fisheries practices. Senior scientists, including Dr. Prajith K.K. and Dr. Sandhya K.M., also spoke.
Simultaneous celebrations were held at ICAR-CIFT's research centers in Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, and Veraval, showcasing the institute's nationwide efforts to promote sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.
