Sea trials with fuel consumption meter revealed that 2-3 liters of diesel can be saved per hour of trawling, compared to the existing boards of same dimensions.  Trawl telemetry analysis revealed that horizontal spread of the new otter board is slightly better. Annual fuel saving of a medium sized trawler would be around 2,400 liters. The technology has been accepted by the trawl owners, especially in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat and there are many suppliers of the doors in Cochin.
