National Science Day Celebrated at ICAR-CIFT

In line with the theme of 2018, "Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future”, ICAR-CIFT, Cochin and the Vraval research centre of ICAR-CIFT celebrated ‘The National Science Day’ on 28th of February, 2018.

At Cochin the Day coincided with the valedictory function of the three months International Training in Fishing Technology under  Dr. C.V. Raman International Fellowship for African Researchers. On the occasion Dr. V.P.N. Nampoori, Emeritus  Professor, International School of Photonics, CUSAT, Cochin delivered a lecture on Sir C.V. Raman and his inspiring life and work. In his lecture he stressed the need for original research and sustainable science in the country as shown by Bhaarat Ratna, Dr. C.V. Raman. C.V Raman’s nature of work, personal and professional life and major achievements were highlighted during the talk.

Dr.  Abbas  Muhieldeen Osama, Associate Professor, Gezira University, Sudan joined ICAR-CIFT on 27 November, 2017 in the Fishing Technology Division.  Apart from the training he has carried out a project work on trammel net fishing. He visited several places in and around Cochin for gear survey and interacted with the local fishermen. He has also went onboard ICAR-CIFT research vessels and private vessels for marine and inland fishing.

Dr. Leela Edwin, Head, FT Division welcomed the gathering and introduced the training programme and also introduced  the Chief Guest to the audience . Dr. M.P. Remesan, the Host Scientist of the training presented the detailed report. Dr. Ravishankar C.N, Director, ICAR-CIFT talked about the National Science Day and Dr. C.V. Raman fellowship. Later Dr. Osama, the international trainee talked about his training experience and thanked all the staff at ICAR-CIFT for the training. Dr. Ravishankar gave the training certificate to Dr. Osama. The portrait of Dr. C.V. Raman painted by Dr. M.P. Remesan was also received by Dr. Ravishankar. Dr. P. Muhamed Ashraf, Principal Scientist proposed the vote of thanks.

At Veraval Research Centre of ICAR-CIFT various activities, including quiz and oral presentations by the scientists of ICAR-CIFT and ICAR-CMFRI were organized. Dr. A.K. Jha, SIC of the Centre in his address, inspired the staff to promote scientific temper and emphasized on the need remember the determination and efforts of all great scientists of the past. He also talked on the topic ‘We are what we eat’ and stressed upon the nutritional significance of different types of food and the necessity to choose food for sustainable well-being.  Dr. D. Divu, SIC, Veraval Rsearch Centre of  ICAR-CMFRI  thanked all the inventors who made our life more comfortable and appreciated ICAR-CIFT for organizing the event. He gave a presentation on ‘Environmental benefits of composting’.
 
Dr. K.K. Prajith, Scientist, ICAR-CIFT talked on environmental paradigms and conservation of biodiversity with the major focus on protecting the marine resources and the Asiatic lion in the Gir Forest. Shri Rajan Kumar, Scientist, ICAR-CMFRI addressed the major issues in the academic curriculum of fishery science in India. Smt. V. Renuka, Scientist, ICAR-CIFT shared the significance of scientific applications in our daily life with practical examples while Dr. S. Remya, Scientist, ICAR-CIFT recalled the exemplary research of Sir C.V. Raman and gave a presentation on the importance of immunization and its contribution to global health. Shri M. M. Damodara, AAO, ICAR-CIFT proposed the vote of thanks.
