The Visakhapatnam Research Centre of ICAR-CIFT organized a series of Workshops cum training programmes on “Fabrication of foldable traps and gillnets” under the Tribal Sub Plan Programme during the month of March, 2016.
At Surempalem Resrvoir
A programme was conducted at Surempalem reservoir, Kothada, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh on 5th March, 2016. During the programme Dr. G. Rajeswari explained about the need for conservation of resources and the importance of the responsible fishing technological practices. Dr. M.M. Prasad, Principal Scientist & Nodal Officer for TSP & NEH explained the TSP and other activities under taken by ICAR-CIFT for the development of freshwater fishery sector. Practical demonstrations were given by Shri B. Pradhan, ACTO on fabrication and operation of gil nets and foldable fish traps. Fifty tribal beneficiaries belonging to three villages of Kothada, Surampalem and Kothapeta attended the programme. The programme was arranged in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Andhra Pradesh. At the end of the programme foldable traps and gillnets were distributed to the fishermen.
Another programme was conducted at Bhupatipalem reservoir, Rampachodavaram, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh on 18th March, 2016 in collaboration with Department of Fisheries Andhra Pradesh. Dr. G. Rajeswari, Principal Scientist & Scientist Incharge of the Centre explained the technologies developed by ICAR-CIFT and the Tribal Sub Plan Programmes undertaken by the Institute for the benefit of fishermen of freshwater fisheries sector. Dr. R. Raghu Prakash, Principal Scientist explained the foldable traps, gillnets, coracle, canoes and various designs of boats designed at ICAR-CIFT to cater the needs of traditional fishermen of rural areas. Dr. M. Swami Kumar, CTO demonstrated the fabrication of foldable traps and gillnets and explained the operational aspects. Bhupatipalem reservoir comes under small reservoir category which haswater spread area of 300 hectares. There are Three villages around the reservoir with 60 registered fisher-folk who depend mainly on fisheries for their livelihood. Around 50 fishers are benefited with this workshop. At the end Dr. Rajeswari handed over the foldable fish traps and gillnets to the fishermen of Bhupatipalem and Gandinagaram villages.
At Tajangi Reservoir
Another programme was conducted at Tajangi Reservoir, Chintapalli Mandal, Visakhapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh, on 26th March, 2016. During the programme Dr. G. Rajeswari explained about the need for conservation of resources and the importance of the responsible fishing technological practices. Practical demonstrations were given on fabrication and operation of gillnets and foldable fish traps. Fifty tribal beneficiaries belonging to three villages of Kothada, Surampalem and Kothapeta attended the programme. The programme was arranged in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Andhra Pradesh.
At the end of the programme distributed foldable traps and gillnets.
