ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Cochin conducted a Two days’ training program on “Production of chitin, chitosan and glucosamine” for the benefit of three trainees from Malpe, Karnataka during 6-7 December, 2016. Shri Harish Poojary, Shri Padmanabh and Shri Rikesh, all fish traders by profession, attended the program. A lecture on ‘Production chitin and derivates’ was delivered by Dr. A.A. Zynudheen, Principal Scientist, Fish Processing Division. The laboratory techniques on the production of chitin, chitosan and glucosamine hydrochloride from prawn shell waste were demonstrated to the participants. The trainees visited the pilot plant and facilities were explained. Quality assessment of the chitosan produced was carried out and the details on setting up of a chitosan plant was also discussed. Shri K. Ajeesh and Shri M. Udayakumar, Technical staff of the Byproducts Section were also involved with the training. The program ended with distribution of certificates to the participants.
