ICAR-CIFT imparts entrepreneurial skill to unemployed rural youths of Andaman and Nicobar
As a part of Govt. of India’s Skill Development Programme followed by the initiatives taken by Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Port Blair; ICAR-CIFT conducts a skill based in-house training programme on ‘Post- harvest technology for preservation and value addition of marine resources’ for the unemployed rural youths of the A&N Islands. The programme has been contemplated with an objective to develop skilled human resource pool to promote start-up entrepreneurship in fish processing and value addition keeping in mind the prioritized objective of blue economic growth of the country. The scheduled five days training programme starting from 16-21 August, 2017has been sponsored by Directorate of Industries, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Port Blair. About 15 selected rural youths along with two officers Shri Sindhupathi Raja, IPO and Shri R. Janak Rao, Laboratory In-Charge from Deptt. of Industry, A&N administration participated in the programme.
Presiding over the inaugural programme held on 16 August, 2017; Dr. Ravishankar C.N., Director, ICAR-CIFT appreciated the welcoming step taken by A& N administration to tap the local youth potential for upscaling the fish-preneurship by using the latest postharvest technologies in fisheries developed by ICAR-CIFT. He said that this would ensure the sustainability in the promotion of fishery based economic enterprises developed through optimum utilization of the available resources of the island.
Shri Sindhupathi Raja, Industries Promotion Officer, Deptt. of Industries, A&N Administration, Port Blair in his remarks told that the A&N administration has taken action to generate employment opportunities for the unemployed youths by harnessing the umpteen and unexplored marine resources of the island, for which the training programme has been planned.
The Course Director Dr. K. Ashok Kumar, Head, Fish Processing Division, ICAR-CIFT outlined the course details of the training programme, which has been designed keeping eye upon the available fish resources and market potential of different value added products in the islands. Coordinating the programme Dr. A.K. Mohanty, Head, EIS Division delivered welcome address and Dr. C.O. Mohan, Senior Scientist, FP Division offered vote of thanks. The resource-scientists of the institute also attended the inaugural programme.
