Recently there were reports on marketing of fishes added with formaldehyde in Assam. Formaldehyde is a toxic aldehyde which is listed as cancer causing agent by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Marketing of adulterated fishes with these chemicals can lead to serious health problems among fish eaters. ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology has conducted a one workshop at Directorate of fisheries, Meen Bhavan, Guwahati to give awareness on the harmful effects of use of formaldehyde and its health consequences. Additional secretary, deputy director, marketing officers, fishery development officers and nodal officers from various districts of Assam attended the workshop. A demonstration on the use of the formaldehyde test kit was conducted. Various issues related to formaldehyde adulteration in fish in the state was discussed in detail. Test kits were distributed among the official for strengthening the field survey so reduce the adulteration.
