Dr. Kasturirangan, Eminent Scientist and Member, Planning Commission Visits CIFT

 
Dr. Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan eminent scientist and Member (Science), Planning Commission visited CIFT, on 7.12.2011 and interacted with the scientists of the Institute. Also present during the occasion was Dr. Vandana Dwivedi, Joint Advisor (Agriculture), Planning Commission.  Dr. Kasturirangan was a Member of Upper House of Indian Parliament during 2003-2009. For over 9 years until 2003, Dr. Kasturirangan steered the Indian Space programme as Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization. Under his leadership, the programme witnessed several major milestones including the successful launching and operationalisation of the India's prestigious launch vehicles, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, the development and launching of some of the world's best civilian remote sensing satellites, IRS-1C and 1D, new generation INSAT communication satellites, besides ocean observation satellites IRS-P3/P4. He has been conferred with the highest civilian honours Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan by the President of India and Award of ‘Officer of the Legion d’honneur’ by the President of the French Republic, France.

During his interaction with Director and Heads of Divisions and in his address to the scientists, Dr. Kasturirangan deliberated on the state of fisheries and the approach to development required for XII Plan period, on aspects pertaining to the fisheries sector. He stressed the need for conservation in fisheries and the importance of making research products quickly available to the stakeholders through processes such as business and technology incubation. He also discussed about the increasing role the private industries have to play in the 12th Plan and mentioned that the contribution to research during XII could be of the order of 2% with equal support from the industry and government. Dr. Kastrurirangan appreciated the good technological support CIFT has been giving to the seafood industry. The visiting dignitaries also participated in an observation cruise onboard the new CIFT research vessel, Matsyakumari-II
