National Seminar on 'AquaFood Excellence: Innovations in Post-Harvest Fisheries' Begins at ICAR-CIFT, Kochi

The National Seminar on 'AquaFood Excellence: Innovations in Post-Harvest Fisheries,' organized by the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) in collaboration with the Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) (SOFTI), commenced today at the ICAR-CIFT campus in Kochi. The seminar, running from September 2 to 4, 2024, marks a significant event in the field of aquatic food science, with a focus on the latest advancements and innovations in the post-harvest sector.

The seminar was officially inaugurated today by Shri. P. Rajeeve, Hon'ble Minister for Law, Industries, and Coir, Government of Kerala. In his address, Minister Rajeeve emphasized the importance of fostering entrepreneurship within educational institutions through campus industrial parks. He highlighted that such initiatives are key to strengthening industry-academia collaboration and promoting the utilization of unused land for industrial purposes. "Research institutes can play a crucial role in enhancing entrepreneurial activities in Kerala. I believe this seminar will further strengthen industrial activities in the seafood sector, paving the way for new collaborations and innovations," said Minister Rajeeve.

Dr. George Ninan, Director of ICAR-CIFT, presided over the function. In his speech, Dr. Ninan emphasized the institute's commitment to sustainability in fisheries, value addition, and the adoption of the latest post-harvest technologies. "CIFT has always been at the forefront of promoting sustainable fisheries and value addition. This seminar is an excellent opportunity to showcase and adopt new technologies that can propel the industry forward," he remarked.

Shri. G. Pawan Kumar, National President of the Seafood Exporters Association of India was the Guest of Honour.  Prof. Dr. B. Madhusudhana Kurup, Founder Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) and recipient of the SOFTI Biennial Award 2021, was presented with the award by the Chief Guest during the inaugural function.

 Dr. Bindu J., Head of the Fish Processing Division at ICAR-CIFT, and Dr. Nikita Gopal, Head of the Extension Information and Statistics Division at ICAR-CIFT and Secretary of SOFTI, also spoke.

Approximately 100 delegates from various fields are participating in the seminar, making it a significant event for professionals and stakeholders in the fisheries sector. Participants will engage in knowledge exchange, discussions on innovative solutions, and exploration of the latest technologies that can enhance the value of aquatic products while promoting sustainability. The seminar is anticipated to catalyze discussions and innovations that will shape the future of the post-harvest fisheries industry in India.
