A modern Fish Processing and Value Addition Unit, along with a scientifically designed Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), established with technical consultancy support from ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, was inaugurated on 27th February 2026 at Chengannur, Alappuzha, by Shri. Saji Cherian, Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries, Culture and Youth Affairs, Government of Kerala. The facility has been set up by Kerala State Co-operative Federation for Fisheries Development Ltd. (MATSYAFED) under a formal Memorandum of Agreement with ICAR-CIFT, marking a significant milestone in strengthening value addition and sustainable processing practices in Kerala’s fisheries sector.

The newly inaugurated unit focuses on hygienic fish processing and the production of diversified value-added fish products aimed at enhancing marketability, improving shelf life, and increasing income opportunities for fisherfolk communities. ICAR-CIFT provided comprehensive technical support for the design, equipment specifications, process optimization, and on-site guidance required for establishing the facility. In addition, technical personnel were trained to ensure efficient operation and adherence to scientific processing standards.
A key component of the project is the Effluent Treatment Plant integrated within the facility. The ETP has been designed to ensure scientific treatment of wastewater generated during fish processing, enabling compliance with environmental regulations and promoting responsible, eco-friendly operations.
ICAR-CIFT, a premier national research institute under ICAR specializing in harvest and post-harvest fisheries technologies, continues to play a pivotal role in transferring proven technologies to the cooperative and industry sectors. The scientific team from ICAR-CIFT involved in the consultancy included Dr. C.O. Mohan, Dr. Remya S., Mr. Sreejith S., Dr. Bindu J., and Mr. Saju T.P.
The inauguration of this fish processing and value addition unit is expected to strengthen cooperative-based fish marketing systems, generate employment, and support the modernization of the fisheries sector in Kerala.
