World Fisheries Day Celebrations by Visakhapatnam Research Centre of ICAR-CIFT

As part of World Fisheries Day Celebrations the following programs were organized by the Visakhapatnam Research Centre of ICAR-CIFT:

Training Program on  Microbiological Examination of Seafood :A 13 day training program on "Laboratory Methods for Microbiological Examination of Seafood" for providing hands-on skills to the technologists of seafood processing plants was inaugurated at the Centre on World Fisheries Day on 21 November, 2016. A total of 18 participants representing seafood processing plants located in different parts of Andhra Pradesh are participating in the training programme. The programme provides hands-on training on analyzing fish and water samples for the bacterial loads, faecal indicator bacteria and pathogenic bacteria; good laboratory practices, HACCP, regulations related to fish export and quality issues pertaining to seafood exports.

An awareness program on “Hygienic handling of fish” was organized at the Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav adopted village Mangamaripeta in Bhemunipatnam Mandal, Visakhapatnam with support of NETFISH-MPEDA; Fisherfolk Foundation and District Fishermen’s Youth Welfare Association (DFYWA) on 21 November, 2016.  The program was attended by 50 fisher women. Dr. U. Sreedhar, Principal Scientist speaking on this occasion explained to the women the need for hygienic handling of fish and briefed them about the various types of value added products and informed them that ICAR-CIFT can provide the necessary training. He also explained the present state of unsustainable fishing practices the fishermen are involved and urged the women to educate the men folk so as to take action to maintain their marine resources for now and for future generations. Shri Arjilli Dasu, Executive Secretary, DFYWA spoke about the training on various technologies ICAR-CIFT can provide and requested to take full use of it. The program was also attended by Dr. Vesavila, Fisheries Consultant. Speaking on this occasion she stressed the need for the women to be independent and foster much more interest in activities involving the trade of fish.

Participation in the Exhibition at Srikakulam:

The Centre also participated in the exhibition organized by the State Fisheries Department held in connection with World Fisheries Day Celebrations at Srikakulam on 21 November, 2016. The training-cum-demonstration programme on preparation of value added products from low cost fishes was also arranged in the stall which was visited by many students and other enthusiasts and dignitaries like  Shri  Kuna Ravi Kumar, Smt. Gunda Laxmi Devi and Shri Bugga Laxman Rao, MLAs; Shri Laxmi Narayana Rao, Dist. Collector; Smt. Ch. Dhanalakshmi, Zilla Panchayath Chairperson; Dr. V.V.
