Winters school on Responsible Fishing: recent advances in resource and energy conservation

Shri. Madhu, S. Nair, CMD, Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kerala inaugurated the 21 days ICAR sponsored winters school on the subject “Responsible Fishing: recent advances in resource and energy conservation”, at ICAR-CIFT. In his inaugural address,he urged the need to streamline research and development to cater to the safety, social and economic well-being of the millions of fishermen in the country. While highlighting the success of the 18 numbers of deep-sea fishing vessels developed by CSL in collaboration with ICAR-CIFT for Govt. of Tamil Nadu under the Blue revolution scheme of Govt. of India, he lauded the impetus given by CIFT for the blue economic growth of the country and also suggested the need for developing scientific designs for fishing vessel that are highly safe, energy efficient,and economically viable.About 20 participants from various institutes covering 9 different states attended the Winter School. On this occasion a Compendium of Lectureswas released by the guests on the dais.

The Guest of Honour Dr. B. Meenakumari, Former Chairperson, National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) and Ex-DDG (Fisheries), ICAR emphasized the importance of fisheries for the growth of Indian agriculture and applauded the effort of CIFT scientists for taking up an appropriate initiative to conduct the ICAR Sponsored Winter School on responsible fishing, the need of the hour. Dr. V.V. Sugunan, former ADG, ICAR in his address mentioned that ICAR Sponsored Winter/ Summer school is intended to update the knowledge and skill of scientists/ faculties of research institutes / SAUs on cutting edge technologies in the relevant field.


Dr. K. Ashok Kumar, Director In-charge, ICAR-CIFT, Cochin presided over the function and spoke about the promising technologies evolved by CIFT for sustainable fishing with bearings on energy conservation.


At the outset, Dr. Leela Edwin, Head of Division, Fishing Technology and Course Director of the ICAR sponsored Winter School, welcomed the gathering and briefed about the 21 days training program that covers the entire gamut of advances in the field of resource and energy conservation.  The function concluded with the vote of thanks by Mr. M.V. Baiju, Senior Scientist and Course Coordinator of the winter school.
