Tribal Sub Plan Programme Conducted

A Training cum demonstration programme was conducted by ICAR-CIFT, Visakhapatnam Research Centre at Pedderu Reservoir, V. Madugula (Mandal), Visakhapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh on 22 April, 2016  under the TSP programme for the benefit of tribal fishers. The Pedderu reservoir has a water spread area of 110 hectares.  Rohu and Catla are the main fish species available in the Pedderu reservoir. Shri Kooti Kondamma Girijan Matsyakara Society with 90 members is associated with the Pedderu reservoir fisheries.  Recently the State Fisheries Department has introduced cage culture of Tilapia in the Pedderu reservoir. 

 

Dr. R Raghu Prakash, Principal Scientist and Dr. B. Madhusudana Rao, Senior Scientist conducted the training programme in collaboration with Andhra Pradesh Fisheries Department.  Dr. Raghu Prakash explained the advances in fishing techniques that can be adopted  in Pedderu reservoir for sustainable fishery and for enhancement of lively hood of the fishers.  Dr. Raghu Prakash and Shri B.K. Pradhan, Technical Officer demonstrated the use of foldable traps. Dr. Madhusudana Rao explained the importance of icing and hygienic handling.  He also briefed on the value added fish products as an additional source of income.  He also suggested avenues for wholesale marketing of the reservoir fish at Rampuram wholesale fish market for better price realization. Sixty five tribal fishers attended the awareness-cum-training programme.  Inputs  for responsible fishing such as gillnets, foldable traps and insulated fish bags for  preserving the quality of fish were distributed to the tribal fishers.  Shri G. Rajesh, Fisheries Development Officer, Pedderu, Andhra Pradesh  in his concluding remarks stressed the need to adopt modern practices of harvest and post harvest technologies.
