ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Cochin has initiated livelihood development programmes for tribal fishermen of Kuttiadi reservoir area. Under the Scheduled Tribe Component (erstwhile TSP), ICAR-CIFT has initiated skill development programmes and distribution of fishing inputs in association with Peruvannamuzhy SC/ST Fishermen Co-Operative Society. Shri T.P. Ramakrishnan, Honorable Minister of Labour and Excise, Government of Kerala inaugurated the programme on 22 December, 2018 at Peruvannamuzhy. In the inaugural speech, the Minister pointed out the potential of fisheries sector for income and employment generation. Institutional support is necessary to harness the potential appropriately. Further, he sought the continuous support of ICAR-CIFT for the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources in Kuttiadi reservoir. Dr. Ravishankar C.N., Director, ICAR-CIFT informed the gathering that the Institute has planned a series of skill development activities for the empowerment of tribal fisherfolks. He assured technical expertise and support for the future endeavours in the area. Dr. M.P. Remesan, Principal Scientist, Fishing Technology Division, ICAR-CIFT explained about the challenges being faced by the fisheries sector and ICAR-CIFT initiatives for overcoming those challenges. Dr. A. Suresh, Principal Scientist, Extension Information and Statistics Division highlighted the need for collective action for managing the open access resources and value chain development. The programme was presided by Smt. Sheeja Sasi, President Chakkittappara Gram Panchayath. The programme was attended by members of Gram Panchayat, Block Panchayat and District Panchayat, in addition to representatives of different political parties.
