Fish is a very important natural resource and its judicious exploitation calls for adoption of technologies that are carefully designed and scientifically proven. Unlike in other commodities like agricultural products or animal products vide variations in behavioural patterns and other intrinsic characteristics necessitates specialized technologies for the harvesting and processing of this resource. Developing appropriate harvesting methods, including specialized gear and vessels for the various species is an area where constant innovations are required. Utilization of the harvested product depends on availability of suitable technologies for product development and maintenance of product quality.
